Perhaps our mountains are in fact even more stunning once the snow has melted. Certainly in this true French Alpine setting your senses are in for a treat. Watch as Vaujany Alpine mountain resort is transformed back to its centuries old farming roots with locals going about their business, smell the beautiful meadow flowers and fresh mountain air and listen to the gentle, almost meditational clang of cow bells on the pastures above, whilst the La Fare waterfall, now set free of its frozen state, tumbles down the rock face opposite. All warmed by more than 300 days of sunshine a year; perfect for a French Alps holiday.
Though we try to keep the cost of our French Alps holidays as low as possible all year round, there is no doubt that the summer is a different animal. Prices come right down! Traditionally mountain skiing holidays might be thought of as pricey, often due to the extras that go along with skiing; lift passes, ski hire and expensive mountain restaurants. On top of the lower summer prices for our excellent accommodation, these extras vanish too. Activities in the area are as much for locals as for visitors, restaurants in the valleys open up, providing great daily specials at local prices and everything is cheaper. Fantastic value!
Change your scenery to one of mountain walks, red sunsets reflecting off the surrounding peaks, green valleys, miles of perfect cycling climbs or just blue skies and gin and tonics in the garden before dinner - change your scenery to La Villette!
What makes Vaujany alpine mountain resort a perfect winter destination also makes it a wonderful place to spend summer in the Alps, with a few changes which only improve things. The fantastic and incredibly cheap local crèche remains open, the first class indoor pool opens its glass doors to a sun soaked terrace, and the local tourist office hosts a fantastic kids club with a whole host of daily activities for children of all ages. The streets are still virtually car free with the biggest vehicle on them the famous ‘petit train’ - hours of fun for the young ones! Vaujany holds the coveted French Famille Plus Label, which basically means it has to be an excellent place!
Our famous Chalet Saskia beautifully converts from cosy log-fired winter luxury to open, airy, sandals and shorts French Alps summer holiday bliss. The snow filled view changes as you now gaze right down into the beautifully lush green valley below, typical summer in the Alps scenery, or straight across to the white waves that gush down free-flowing La Fare waterfall – the balcony still the perfect place for an aperitif or open air kids dinner. Our star Chef Marcus Cull adapts his menus to lighter seasonal summer dishes without straying from excellence. The formula remains the same: Saskia luxury all year round!
A stay in La Villette in the summer is almost like stepping back in time. This is real Alpine mountain resort France; the cows are grazed on the pastures above, the goats march through the village each morning and evening and the daily baguettes are delivered from the valley below in time for breakfast. Stay in our gorgeous converted farmhouse (now three independent chalets), barbeque on the terrace, and play table-tennis in garden, blow up a plastic swimming pool for the kids or take a deck chair and relax in the sunshine. Walks a plenty on your doorstep, modern facilities nearby, comfy lodgings – everything needed for a family summer holiday - bliss.
Fancy following in the tracks of Armstrong or Pantani and tackling the famous 21 turns up to Alpe d’Huez? Or perhaps the thrill of completing the Marmotte a 174km long annual cycle race featuring an incredible total 5180m of climbing. Vaujany is the perfect location for both. We also sit just below the start of the Megavalanche mountain bike race - a quite incredible downhill rush as you set off from an often still snow capped Pic Blanc at 3300m and ride, stumble, crash your way down to the bottom of the valley at 1100m - some challenge! As French Alps summer holidays go, few offer better cycling challenges.
Vaujany alpine mountain resort in the Rhone Alps is paradise for the climber and serious mountain walker. You are surrounded by a series of impressive peaks and several excellently run refuges at which to base yourself the night before the final ascent. For first timers ‘via ferratas’ (climbing routes with fixed cables) provide quite the challenge and for more experienced climbers several guide books show routes in the area. We can also recommend mountain guides if you’re ready for some extreme French Alps fun. Vaujany on its quiet hillside with its charming places for a cool beer is the perfect base to return to after a long days climbing.
Staying in Vaujany or La Villette alpine mountain resort means you literally step out of your front door onto one of several great walks. There are easy walks through the village and valley below or you could take the cable car up the different levels of the mountain for more challenging altitude walks. Paths are clearly marked, of differing lengths and levels of difficulty and dotted with superb picnic spots. There is every chance to spot marmottes, chamois or eagles. The hardest part is trying to do justice to the incredible scenery with your camera - you’ll need to bring lots of memory cards. For an Alps summer holiday, you could not wish for more.
Yes as a matter of fact you could even ski. The 3600m glacier only an hours’ drive away in Les Deux Alpes is open July and August. It is quite an experience to ski on an Alps summer holiday. However, more traditional activities are plentiful in or around Vaujany: tennis on the excellent free village courts, sailing, windsurfing or pedalos on the lake below, adventure parks nearby where all the family can swing through tree tops, and great rapids for rafting. There are great drives to be had to wonderful destinations such as Briancon, day spas, historical Grenoble or even Italy – on a Ski Peak French Alps summer holiday you will not be bored!
