Every rider, pro or amateur, dreams of going head to head with the 21 hairpins of the amazing Alpe d’Huez climb or completing the incredible La Marmotte or indeed taking on any of the numerous Cols that are within easy reach on a Ski Peak holiday. Cycling in the French Alps is must for any rider. In fact the range of famous mountain roads open to you from your Vaujany base is simply outstanding. Of more than 24,500 worldwide climbs rated by the popular international network for active cyclists climbbybike you can take on no less than 3 of the top 20 from the comfort of your Vaujany chalet.
*In other words after a seven day holiday you can complete a massive fifteen percent of the world’s best climbs! Who and where else offers this?
“The bicycle is the means and perhaps the art of getting pleasure out of a pain”.
It is little wonder then, that thanks to its convenient location - we are on the Col du Sabot road, just above the Col du Glandon/Croix de la Fer road and only a quick downhill warm up from the start of the hugely popular cyclosportive Marmotte - and the fantastic facilities for un-winding with the peace that purpose built resorts lack, Vaujany is fast becoming one of the highest rated bases for cycling the Oisans and Grenoble cycling. During the summer somewhat of an international riders community is establishing itself in the village. Those in ‘the know’ from Holland, Belgium, Italy, other parts of France and of course the UK come to Vaujany and return year after year. The dream of cycling in the Alps, lives on and grows stronger.
Cycling in the French Alps is great. But riding out of Vaujany every morning whether to train or compete, is like riding through the annals of cycling history. Saddling up and riding narrow mountain roads to soaring mountain passes, racing down steep hill sides and reaching cool valley floors, the scenery that surrounds the rider is awe-inspiring, the challenges seemingly insurmountable and the satisfaction of completion indescribable. You are following in the tracks of the greats. Participate in the iconic Etape du Tour, and you are literally doing so!
The range of events and challenges available each year is huge and what’s more, it’s growing. From taking on the timed Grimpe de L’Alpe - a 13km mass participation start from Bourg (every Monday and Thursday) up the 21 hairpins to Alpe d’Huez and the Alpe d’Huez climb something every rider surely should attempt at least once in a lifetime – to completing La Marmotte or the local La Vaujany (Master and Senior), there are races to suit every ability throughout the summer. Check out our events calendar to see just how many.
