Vaujany alpine mountain resort and village is blessed with several great dining out options during the summer months. A couple of the French Alp mountain restaurants convert to great outdoor eateries and the local refuge does excellent hikers lunches. For self-caterers the village supermarket is open and for a more extensive selection only 20 minutes away in Bourg d’Oisans the Casino supermarket stocks everything you might need. The French Alps in summer is a foodie paradise.
As you are driving up from Grenoble at the beginning of your stay, we recommend stopping off in Vizille (only 45 minutes from the village) at the Carrefour supermarket. The selection is good as are the prices. It is a great chance to stock up on fresh items like dairy and vegetables, pick up the essential barbeque coals and give us a call in the village to confirm your arrival time.
During the week, the small Spar supermarket in Vaujany can take care of your daily needs; the Boulanger a couple of doors down will have fresh baguettes and croissants in the morning. For a bigger shop drive down to Bourg d’Oisans (20 minutes) and shop at the Casino Supermarket - very convenient on the way back from a great day out in the Venosc valley, a cycle up to Alpe d’Huez or an excursion further afield.
Fancy Gratin Dauphinois? Traditional Fondue? Tartiflette? Raclette? Pizza or spaghetti for the children? Or try some of the wonderful truly local Vaujany dishes you can seek out with a little effort. For lunch and in the evening dining out in Vaujany is a real pleasure. There are a couple of great little bars for a traditional kir aperitif, a chance to mingle with some of the village characters and it’s never far to wander along to one of the charming little restaurants so popular with holiday makers and locals alike. Being a village rather than a large resort, the restaurants are small, charming and rarely full, giving you all the benefits of attentive service along with good fresh food prepared there and then. Then back to Stief’s new bar for ‘one last genepi’. A couple of our favourite French Alp summer options are...
In the summer the square in front of the Hotel Rissiou is a glorious suntrap and a great place for an aperitif. Why not then simply be tempted into staying on into the evening for an authentic taste of France as owner Jean-Francois dons his apron and cooks up traditional French Alp favourites.
Stief and his bar have moved. But fear not Stief, who has become somewhat of a local living legend, has simply moved to somewhere bigger and better a hundred yards from where he used to serve his delicious rums. Now Stief’s Bar and Resto stays open in the summer and serves food as well as delicious Belgian beers – try the Triple Karmeliet. A sort of Hard Rock style menu offers a great range of burgers and steaks – delicious!
The family favourite. Pascal’s wood fired oven pizzas are now legendary, and the atmosphere extremely cosy, with wooden walls and old mountain tools aplenty surrounding you. Or drink in the view and dine ‘al fresco’ on the sundrenched terrace with great views all around. Traditional French Alp mountain dishes are prepared with great care. Take away also possible.
Carrying on the tradition of great mountain food (tartiflette, fondue and raclette are specialities), Fabian and Virginie have taken over the reins at this charming little restaurant at the top of the village. You can eat inside or outside, either way you’ll be well looked after and not go hungry.
This is THE place for real Vaujany food and a chance to experience dishes you literally might only find in this village. Well worth the mile or so walk just out of Vaujany, there is a large menu with more traditional plates, but foodies must try some of their special centuries’ old recipes. In their garden behind the restaurant M and Mme Passoud grow the vegetables and herbs needed for this unique mountain fare and they are harvested sometimes just as you order! Get a balcony table for a magical view of the valley below; it is quintessential French Alps in the summer.
For two seasons now Lilly has turned her traditional meats and cheese shop into a sun-drenched terrace lunchtime heaven. Right in the centre of the village, people watch, drink chilled rose and indulge in one of the enormous salads. Everything is super-fresh, everything is super-well presented and everything, as the French say, is super-bon!
Severine is back and with her comes great food, service and her famous smile. The location is the same, so is the name, but the food is possibly even better and if you want a special night out in Vaujany, this is the place to come.
Eat at the tennis courts just above La Villette and you’ll be surrounded by some of the very best views imaginable for a BBQ. The French Alps in the summer sunshine are all around. The restaurant does great tennis-watching-snacks and surprisingly good steaks. However, its real strength are the ‘bring your own meat’ BBQs. Once a week the BBQ is fired up, there is often music and as the sun sets you grill what you’ve brought and wash it down with chilled ‘demis’ or wine from the restaurant.
A short but steep, very scenic walk (allow 45 minutes) up from the first stage of the cable car, will see you arrive at the superbly located local refuge half way up a real French Alp. Whether you plan to stay the night and take advantage of some of the activities on offer or not, lunch here is a rustic, yet surprisingly tasty affair. The crepes, cheese and charcuterie plats and home-baked cakes are delicious and ample fuel for further miles.
A winter favourite thanks to its remote setting, spectacular views and good food, Chalet du Lac is no less impressive when the snow has melted. Accessible after a good hours stroll in from Alpette passing lakes and with great wildlife spotting opportunities or by car from Alpe d’Huez for the non-walkers, lunching in the sunshine on the wooden terrace is probably one of the best French Alps in the summer options for a great mountain feed.
Head Chef Marcus Cull’s wizardry, mountain bike madness, glorious sunsets and fabulous walks – check out paradise after the snow has melted.
